The table tennis group within the Aylsham & District u3a is a strictly for fun activity. There is a wide range of table tennis abilities and experience within the group but there is one common denominator – no-one takes it seriously. This is just as well as half the time, nobody can remember what the score is meant to be!
The games are played every Thursday morning in a pavilion overlooking the cricket pitch. The ceiling is a bit on the low side for table tennis and the space around the tables is a bit restricted, but this just adds to the fun element… you soon learn to dodge balls as they ricochet off the ceiling/walls/someone’s head. Balls do have to be regularly retrieved from the adjacent cricket pitch, usually when inadvertently knocked through the entrance doorway, but also sometimes when a really accomplished member has sent a shot clean through a narrow top window opening during open play.
When not busy laughing or knocking back the tea, coffee and biscuits during an extended refreshments break, some long table tennis rallies do occasionally break out – especially when playing for serve before a game!!
