Bearing in mind my background prior to retirement, it was inevitable that I would end up being closely involved with the local u3a Historical Buildings Group…
As a group, we go on guided tours of historical locations and buildings, and also undertake research on overlooked or undocumented local historical buildings.
So far our researches into little known or overlooked historical buildings around Aylsham have turned out to be unexpectedly fruitful. Reports on the following buildings have been completed:
This former barn stands in the corner of a car park belonging to the former Barclays Bank, right in the middle of the town. On inspection it turned out to have a number of anomalies. We were able to work out when it was built, by whom and the reasons for the anomalies. Download a pdf version of the full Barn Report.
What looks for all the world like an early 20th century bungalow turned out to be a late 19th century cottage with a fascinating history going back to 1827. Download a pdf version of the full Pound Lane Report.
The former TSB premises turned out to be an amalgam of different buildings and periods with an incredibly complex history that includes all of what is now 10, 11, 12 & 13 Market Place. Download a pdf version of the full Former TSB Report.
